Moving to Mauritius changes more than your address. You may rent a home, buy a car, work independently and still spend several weeks in Germany. Build your insurance plan around that actual lifestyle.

This guide supports preparation. Insurers and appropriately qualified specialists must assess the suitability of individual contracts, legal obligations and actual claims.

Describe the life you are planning

Record your residence, intended duration, work and everyone moving with you. Include home visits, ongoing treatment and valuable belongings. Consider what would happen if a temporary stay became permanent.

Health, travel and emergencies

Compare travel, long-stay and health insurance against the intended stay. Ask for written confirmation that your residence and work are accepted. Check outpatient care, hospital treatment, medicines, pre-existing conditions and deductibles. Ask separately about evacuation to another treatment centre and repatriation: who decides, who arranges transport, and which destination is covered?

Assess potential advance payments and limits on individual benefits alongside the premium. Keep the assistance number and policy details accessible to a trusted person, and establish how a hospital obtains approval.

Cars and everyday transport

Before buying, renting or taking over a vehicle, establish which insurance its use requires. Confirm the vehicle, authorised drivers and permitted uses. Ask about third-party liability, damage to your own car, deductibles, towing, replacement transport and storm or flood damage.

  • Rental vehicle: identify exclusions, the deposit and any additional cover included in the quoted price.
  • Owned vehicle: check reporting deadlines, approved garages and repair authorisation.
  • Work use: disclose customer visits or passenger transport. Submit any existing no-claims record for assessment rather than assuming a discount.

Buildings, belongings and personal liability

Separate the building, your possessions and damage you cause to others. Check what the landlord’s policy means for you. Establish who buys each policy and who bears deductibles or damage to furnishings and shared areas.

Ask explicitly about cyclones, heavy rain, flooding and water entering the property. Have the insurer explain definitions and exclusions. Prepare an inventory, photographs and receipts. If the home will be empty for extended periods, check security, maintenance and inspection requirements.

Income and family protection

Disability, accident and term life insurance serve different purposes. Review existing contracts before cancelling them. Obtain written answers on permanent residence in Mauritius, your occupation, travel, claim evidence, payments and beneficiaries. Similar product names are not enough to establish equivalent cover.

Pensions, care and social contributions

The German pension authority notes that permanent residence abroad can affect pension amounts. Obtain an individual assessment before moving. Do not budget for German statutory care benefits in Mauritius without clarification from the relevant fund. Household help, personal support and nursing care need their own funding plan.

CSG is a Mauritian social contribution, not private health insurance. Have your work and residence status assessed for contribution purposes. Keep statutory contributions, potential entitlements and private provision separate.

Get the final answers in writing

  • List each person, risk, contract, period of cover and contact.
  • Identify exclusions, deductibles and benefit limits.
  • Resolve outstanding questions before signing.
  • Coordinate new cover with the confirmed change or end of an existing contract.
  • Review annually and after a change of residence, work or family circumstances.
